Today happens to be Women’s Day. I have received so many messages contragulating me about the same, and I have also sent messages to all my gal’ friends. Feels good – maybe because of the hype created by the media, and the various discounts inducing the women buyers to go out and indulge themselves – a win win situation for everyone.
I would like to just say some lines about this wonderful creation of GOD – WOMAN.
A woman slogs every day 24*7, 365 days a year, and lives selflessly for others. She is the perfect daughter, sister, friend, wife, daughter-in-law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and (so many other roles) and is recently dominating the board rooms and has taken over very well the role of a career woman. But is she getting the due which she deserves, is her contribution recognized by the people around her (read the male species). I do not think so, because if it was such the case then a special “Women’s Day” would not be required to be celebrated. (For my male readers, I am not against celebrating this day – I am against the attitude which most of them have towards women.)
There are talks of women’s empowerment, women’s power everywhere but are the women really emancipated? The plight of women in villages is very bad – poverty, uneducation, child marriage, female infanticide, dowry harrassment, physical and emotional abuse is the norm. The condition of women in cities is better then that of villages but it is not that good also. Women in cities face additional problems – dealing with male chauvinistic egos in workplaces. There is no concept of women having a career – apart from that of a farmer – in villages. I was travelling in a small town in South India a couple of months back and the driver of the car we had rented was shocked to know that i was a career girl. He said it is considered “wrong” if their women step out of the four walls of the house and go to work. The same situation abounds in North India where my roots are based. In my village I cannot even think of wearing my corporate attire as I would be looked upon as some untouchable. (Thank God that I live in a metropolitan city else I am not sure if I would have survived living in this world.) I do not even want to talk about the situation of my fellow sisters “living” outside India (more about it later in some other post). Inspite of everything Women do not lost hope, they fight against fate, fight for themselves and their loved ones.
Talking about urbane women, living a fast paced life in a fast paced city is not easy but atleast I (and countless fellow sisters) have some degree of independence, freedom and choice. I cannot say full degree of independence because in this male dominated society, I doubt if full freedom is possible.
Inspite of whatever the condition is today – I am proud.
I am proud about whatever I am doing.
I am proud because I am fighting the obstacles that I am facing in my life with full courage.
I am proud because I know that I am not as weak as women are pointed out to be.
I am proud because inspite of being in the darkest of situations I can smile.
I am proud because I know that I am stronger than most men around me.
The list will go on and on and I will not stop, so I will just say:
“I am proud to be a WOMAN”
Happy Women’s Day
